In an interview with The Atlanta Journal Constitution, Tom Joyner says he doesn’t really want to leave radio but “I couldn’t get a guaranteed contract after two years.” Joyner is retiring at the end of 2019. Joyner has been in syndication for nearly 25 years, he’s still on 95 stations and reaches 7.4 million listeners every week.

He does have an aging listener base and some station have been trying to skew younger. Steve Harvey and Rickey Smiley have given Joyner a run for his money. Joyner tells Rodney Ho at AJC that, “Ratings are not what they used to be. But when we reach people, we can still move people to do great things.”

And after all these years, he still loves what he does. “My job has not changed: inform and empower and have fun. It’s still the best job on earth. The best part of my day is the four hours I’m on the air.”
