Cumulus Running Spots For News Rival

Would you ever run commercials for radio stations you were trying to crush in the ratings? Chicago Media writer Robert Feder points out that Cumulus has been airing commercials for WLS’s news-talk rival, NPR affiliate WBEZ-FM. And the decision was all about taking the money.

The ads have been running on Classic Hits WLS-FM and Alt. Rocker WKQX-FM. Feder spoke to Cumulus Market Manager Marv Nyren about why he’s running the ads.

Nyren tells Feder this was a financial decision and he welcomed the business as long as he could approve the wording of the spot.

Before returning to Cumulus 2 years ago Nyren was VO of Corporate Sponsorship for Chicago Public Media. “You could say it made me more comfortable knowing what the product was,” he told Feder.

Would you ever run ads for a competing company or radio station?
